Jazzmania Welcomes New Zealand’s Lady Of Jazz

The Trust's Waitakere Brass Band will feature New Zealand's first lady of jazz, Edwina Thorne, at its 2009 Jazz Mania concert on 22 November at the Trusts Stadium.

Edwina's skills as a musician extend well beyond the trumpet that bends to her every note. Truly an international artist, she performed in the USA for nine years and has toured Europe and the Caribbean.

Not one to rest for a bar, Edwina is a graduate of the world renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston and then obtained her Masters in New York.

A recording artist with six albums in her catalogue; Edwina returned to her home country to establish a recording label, Gazelle Music Ltd, and has taught the upcoming brass artists in Auckland for 20 years.

"Edwina has taught many of the players that have sat in our band room, " Steve Booth, Musical Director, said. "We are delighted she is our guest for Jazzmania."

Jazzmania is an annual concert in cabaret style, where the lads and lasses of Waitakere let down their hair after a hard year of banding, and join their audience in an evening of music that taps every corner of the jazz range, and gives the brass band a chance to show just how versatile the ensemble can be.

"This year is one of our finest programmes, and having Edwina taking part is the icing on the cake, " Steve said.
