Copenhagen and all that jazz

Copenhagen is a long-standing favourite for Jazz enthusiasts from all over the world. This July sees the 31st annual Jazz Festival welcoming hundreds of artists to perform the best of all Jazz genres in the Danish capital.

The main event on Saturday 4 July will be the 'Sing the Truth' tribute to Nina Simone at the Concert Hall, featuring Dianne Reeves, Angelique Kidjo, Lizz Wright and Nina Simone's daughter; Simone. The orchestra will be conducted by the legend's own favourite, Al Schackman.

Other highlights include the solo piano concert by Chick Corea on Sunday 5 July at the Royal Danish Theatre and the 25th anniversary celebration of 'Aura', created by Danish musician Palle Mikkelborg. Mikkelborg and Miles Davis very much inspired each other at one time and this work is dedicated to the great man. 'Aura' is performed on Saturday 11 July, also at the Royal Danish Theatre.

Clubs and small cafes are a vital part of the Festival. Performances start all over town in the mornings and continue throughout the day. The most internationally renowned jazz cub in the city is the Copenhagen Jazz House and other great venues are Plaenen in Tivoli Gardens and The Playhouse theatre on the waterfront.

There is music in the air everywhere you go in the city centre, as the Jazz Festival also presents daily street parades, concerts for children and late night concerts in the popular waterfront area. Being at the Copenhagen Jazz festival, you experience a special warm and friendly atmosphere between audience and the musicians. This creates a very special intimacy which is vital for creating high-standard performances and exciting music. Thousands of Jazz fans will be in Copenhagen in July - will you be joining them?
