The Jazz Camp is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the legacy of its namesake and the jazz art form. In the city where jazz was born, interested youth are afforded an opportunity to improve their musicianship, to study under professional artists and educators, and to develop their performance techniques. Students from all economic backgrounds are accepted into the Jazz Camp, and recruitment advisers focus on ensuring that at-risk and financially challenged children are considered as camp participants.
More than 1, 000 young people ages 10-20 have attended the Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp since 1995 and have received hands-on instruction in a variety of instrumentation. The program provides music instruction in piano, drums, bass, woodwinds, and brass instruments. Additional instruction in vocal music and special music composition is offered for advanced students. Jazz campers have performed at the United States Conference of Mayors, as well as taken center stage at the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention.
