Surman and Bollani: European Jazz Prize Nominations

John Surman and Stefano Bollani have been nominated for the European Jazz Prize. Established 2002, the European Jazz Prize, a new category of the long-running Hans Koller Preis, is sponsored by the City of Vienna. Jury members, drawn from 23 European countries, initially nominate 23 European players, subsequently selecting the Musician of the Year "who has attracted major attention at a high artistic level in the international jazz field".. Preliminary rounds of the competition are completed, and the three nominees for Musician of the Year 2007 are John Surman (see photo), Stefano Bollani, and Wolfgang Puschnig.

John Surman's newest ECM recording is "The Spaces In Between", on which his baritone and soprano saxes and bass clarinet are joined by the bass of Chris Lawrence and the violins, viola and cello of the Trans4mation String Quartet. In preparation for early 2008 release is a duo with organist Howard Moody. Additionally, Surman appears on "Romaria", a forthcoming album from John Potter's Dowland Project, also due next year.

Stefano Bollani's most recent ECM release is the album "Piano Solo". In November 2007 he can be heard in duo with Enrico Rava on a new album, "The Third Man".

Alto saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig, third man amongst the prize nominees, also has some ECM history with projects including Red Sun/Samul Nori and AM 4, both with singer Linda Sharrock. He has also often recorded with Carla Bley's projects for WAT T: "Fleure Carnivore", "Big Band Theory", " 4 x 4", and more. The prize-winner will be announced in September.
