A Tribute to Fela Kuti/Benefit for JAAIDS

The night of May 18, 2007 brings some of Chicagos finest musicians, artistis and dancers together to pay homage to the late Fela Kuti. The event to be held at the HotHouse will feature live performances and collaborations by Chicago Afrobeat Project, Mifune from Cleveland, Seneke, Ugochi and Paul Wertico. Before, after and in-between DJ Kennedy Octane will be spinning afro-beat and other dance tunes.

In addition to the music, live breakdancing from members of Chicago Brickheadz and African dance by the CAbP dancers and Muntu members will join the stage. The art gallery next door will be filled with the works of Jiba Molei Anderson and Chad Wick.

All of these artists are getting together to help raise money for JAAIDS- Journalists Against AIDS in Nigeria. All proceeds for this event will go directly to JAAIDS. This is the second event put on by Livin' Live Records of its kind. The first was a late-night performance last December held at the Northsix in Brooklyn. It featured afro-beat bands from Chicago, New York, Boston and D.C. and raised about $700 for JAAIDS.

The night will feature the music of Fela Kuti as well as original music by the featured groups and musicians. Fela Kuti passed away in 1997 from AIDS releated causes. Throughout his 35+ year career as a musician and political activist he traveled across the world spreading his philosophies and afro-beat music. In the past few years many afro-beat bands have popped-up across the United States. All the artists, musicians and dancers have been influenced by Fela and are gathering together to pay homage to a man whos legecy will live on for years to come.

Journalists Against AIDS (JAAIDS) Nigeria is a media-based non-governmental organisation in Nigeria working in the field of HIV/AIDS and development.
