Sixth Annual Arts & Leisure Weekend

The New York Times announced today its sixth annual Arts & Leisure Weekend, with cultural institutions participating throughout the United States and Europe. The Weekend is The Times's annual signature event, a national and international celebration of art and culture to be held Jan. 5 - 7, 2007. It includes interviews by Times journalists with celebrated artists, and special offers at cultural institutions around the world.

In New York City, The Times will host a series of TimesTalks discussions featuring an array of arts luminaries in conversation with Times critics, reporters and editors. This year, headliners include "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams; best-selling memoir authors Augusten Burroughs, Frank McCourt and Jeannette Walls; "Hannah Montana" stars Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Ford; Metropolitan Opera impresario Peter Gelb with acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming; award-winning playwright David Hare with Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore; American abstract painter Brice Marden; Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne; acclaimed jazz and cabaret recording artists Jessica Molaskey and John Pizzarelli; news anchor Dan Rather; Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave with celebrated author Joan Didion; Tony Award winning actor/comedian Martin Short; singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright; and "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams. Tickets go on sale to the public on Nov. 23.

Arts & Leisure Weekend will kick off Jan. 4 at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater with the launch of The Times's new "Emerging Artists" series. This exciting monthly live-performance series will feature established recording artists introducing some of today's freshest new musical talents. Grammy Award winner James Taylor will serve as the special guest host on Jan. 4.

On Monday, Jan. 8, as a finale to the weekend, The Actors' Fund of America will kick off their 125th year with a special TimesTalk featuring pop sensation Fergie. Chief pop music critic Jon Pareles will host the interview and musical performance. Proceeds from this event will benefit The Actors' Fund of America and MusiCares.

"We are looking forward with our sponsors to presenting the biggest, most exciting Arts & Leisure Weekend yet, " said Alyse Myers, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, The New York Times Media Group. "There is truly something to appeal to every arts lover – whether it is the extraordinary lineup of celebrated talents in conversation with Times journalists in New York; the special offers at hundreds of arts institutions around the country and in Europe; the chance to discover some of today's most exciting talents at our new 'Emerging Artists' series; or the gala closing night Actors' Fund/MusiCares benefit showcasing Fergie."

The Times will again have an Access Pass to many events hosted throughout the weekend. The Pass will be available for consumers in event program guides, published in The New York Times and posted on the Arts & Leisure Weekend Web site.
