Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium's 7th Anniversary Celebration

The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, founders of the Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival, announced their 7th Anniversary Celebration taking place on Saturday, October 28, 2006 from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Bedford Stuyvesant Multi Service Center Auditorium.

Headlining CBJC's celebration will be the great jazz performer Grady Tate & Quartet, the best singer to emerge from the ranks of instrumentalist since Nat King Cole. Mr. Tate is best known as a top drummer, much in studio demand. His singing talents are not as well known, though he has released almost a dozen vocal albums and was nominated for a Best Jazz Vocal Grammy in 1986. Grady has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Count Basie and Duke Ellington just to name a few.

CBJC Chairperson Jitu Weusi states, "On Saturday, October 28th, CBJC is having a birthday party and you are invited. We will be swinging from 2 to 7 p.m. to the music of three youth bands and the grand master himself, Mr. Grady Tate. There will be great food provided by some of Brooklyn's undiscovered chefs and there will be good spirits for all. We will also honor some of our finest. Come on out and help wish CBJC Many Happy Returns."

Young aspiring jazz musicians from the Brooklyn High School for the Arts Big Band, Thomas Jefferson Jazz Ensemble and the Crown Heights Youth Collective African Drum Ensemble will also showcase their talents at the celebration.

CBJC will be presenting its Founders Award to individuals who have made outstanding contributions toward the enrichment of the Black Arts. This years awardees include: the elder of the jazz trombone, Mr. Benny Powell; entertainment and monumental photographer Brother Simba Mlee; and Sister April Silver of AKILA WORKSONG, Inc., the organizer of the recent tribute to Gulf Region artists held at Long Island University.

The 7th Anniversary will also act as a stimulant for small community businesses featuring local restaurants and food purveyors. This festive, entitled "A Tasting For Jazz", invites locals to offer a sample of their most popular food items to guests.
