A Beatle Invades Liverpool

Original Beatles drummer Pete Best, from Liverpool, England, will be visiting Liverpool, suburb of Syracuse, New York on Sat. Oct. 21st. This is the first time any Beatle has set foot in the official American 'sister city'. A short tour to Liverpool NY landmarks precedes a fundraiser for the Liverpool Fire Department, and a performance from The Pete Best Band at 8pm at Hooligan's of Liverpool. His upcoming performance, which tops out at almost 90 minutes, is a living history lesson on what The Beatles sounded like when they were forced to 'mach shau' (German for 'make a show') eight hours a night, six days a week in 1960-62. After his performance is over, Pete will gladly sign autographs and shake hands until every fan leaves satisfied.

Pete Best was the drummer for The Beatles during the rough & tumble days in Hamburg, Germany at The Star Club, Kaiserkeller, and Top Ten Club. Back home in Liverpool, he kept the beat for the then-five piece Beatles group in the legendary Cavern Club, The Jacaranda, and his mother's own 'Casbah Club'. Just two weeks ago, Pete was again in the news worldwide, as the AP reported that the UK government had spared The Casbah, a coffee club in the basement of the house he grew up in, from the wrecking ball.

He played drums on the 1962 recording of "My Bonnie" with John Lennon, (Sir) Paul McCartney and George Harrison that truly planted the seed for the future Beatlemania craze. At that time, a local businessman named Brian Epstein owned a small record shop. When legions of music fans started to come in by the droves to request..."My Bonnie by The Beatles?" he decided to investigate the popularity of the band, by visiting them during a lunchtime performance at The Cavern.

The documentary "Best of The Beatles" was recently broadcast nationwide on PBS-TV, and has been released for sale on DVD, giving Pete Best more deserved recognition as the drummer who 'put the beat in Beatles' in their rise to fame. It also gives Pete a chance to tell his side of the story as to why he was abruptly replaced by Ringo Starr on August 22, 1962.
