WORLD STAGE JAZZ FESTIVAL

by R.S.LaRue

The World Stage was founded by late drummer Billy Higgins(world's most recorded drummer) and poet Kamau Daaood in 1989, to fill a cultural void in Los Angeles, Leimert Park area.(43rd Street and Degan Blvd.) Such world-class musicians as Max Roach, late Jackie Mc Lean and Barry Harris have performed or given master classes at the performance space. The actual festival will be held outside Sunday, August 13. This years headliner is Alto saxophonist Charles McPherson(pictured) quartet, Taumbu(an Afro-Cuban styled ensemble that can really generate some energy!), Bobby Matos Afro-Latin Jazz unit.

A tribute to the late and legendary bassist Al McKibbon(he helped pioneer Afro-Cuban style bass playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Chano Pozo in 1940's) A bass choir including John Heard, Roberto Miranda, Nedra Wheeler, Trevor Ware and Edwin Livingston will perform.
