Indian classical music in London

Thursday 21 September 2006 Pandit Shivkumar Sharma (santoor) & Rahul Sharma (santoor) will play Indian classical music in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is the pioneer of the santoor, a 100-stringed instrument similar to the Western dulcimer. It was associated with Sufi and folk music from Kashmir, but Sharma adapted the instrument for the rigours of Indian classical music. In this concert Shivkumar Sharma performs classical and light classical melodies evoking a range of moods.

Rahul Sharma, son of Shivkumar Sharma, opens this evening's concert with tracks from his latest album Maya - the Illusion (Navras), combining santoor, instrumental and vocal harmonies, and accompanied by Indian musicians including vocalist Reena Bharadwaj.
