'On The Outside' Festival

The programme for Newcastle's 'On the Outside' Festival states that it is "dedicated to the memory and inspiration of Derek Bailey and Elton Dean", which pretty well defines the character of the event. Over the three days of 13th - 15th October the Festival's twelve improvising musicians, some of them making their first visit to the UK, will come together in almost twenty different combinations, from duos through to a full ensemble on the final night.

Although a couple of sets will feature established groupings (New York's 'Other Dimensions in Music', and the German/Dutch/American trio of Georg Gräwe, Ernst Reijseger and Gerry Hemingway), nearly all the other meetings will be totally unique. According to organizer Paul Bream, the programme has evolved partly from discussions with the musicians, and partly from "a gut feeling about what might make for challenging combinations".

Even within the published programme, there remains an element of flexibility. "So, for example, we've put together a set for Gail Brand, Daniel Carter, Gerry Hemingway, Pat Rogers and Birgit Ulher, but it's up to them whether they perform as a quintet, or break it up into smaller permutations."

This year's Festival, the third to be organized by Jazz North East, also breaks new ground with the involvement of improvising dancers in several of the sets. The New York musicians in particular work frequently with dancers, and as the Festival is moving to a new venue at Newcastle's state-of-the-art Dance City, it seemed like the right moment to introduce this new dimension. The dancers will work on exactly the same terms as the musicians – "no rehearsals, no pre-arranged moves, just pitch in and see what happens!".
