| Faux Faux at The Cinema in Philadelphia Sunday, July 30 Group Faux Faux (Baikida Carroll, trumpet; Tim Berne, alto saxophone; Tom Rainey, drums; Michael Formanek, double-bass) will perform at The Cinema, Philadelphia. Based in St. Louis, trumpeter/composer Baikida Carroll became a major figure in the Black Artists Group (BAG) in the 1970's. He appeared as featured soloist on Julius Hemphill's first two albums, "Dogon AD" and "Coon Bid'ness", on Oliver Lake's first album, "NTU, " on John Carter's "Castles of Ghana, " on Muhal Richard Abrams' 1983 Down Beat Record of the Year, "Blues Forever" and on Jack DeJohnette's critically-acclaimed "Inflation Blues". He has performed and recorded with artists such as Dewey Redman, Oliver Nelson, Albert King, David Murray, Jay McShann, Amiri Baraka, Charlie Haden, Roscoe Mitchell, Dr. John and Anthony Braxton. Bassist/composer Michael Formanek's intelligent approach to his instrument has led to an impressive range of musical associations. He was a member Tim Berne's Bloodcount as well as Relativity with Marty Ehrlich and Peter Erskine. He has collaborated with Stan Getz, Tony Williams, Gerry Mulligan, the Mingus Big Band, Attila Zoller, Bob Moses, and Gary Thomas, among many others. He appears, most notabley, on Fred Hersch's "Heartsongs", Uri Caine's "Urlicht/Primal Light", Elvis Costello's "North", and Tony Malaby's "Sabino". Tim Berne, a student of Julius Hemphill, has recorded with Olu Dara, Paul Motian, John Carter, Wilco's Nels Cline and Bill Frisell. Best known for his work with Bloodcount (featuring Michael Formanek, Chris Speed and Jim Black), he continues to perform and record with his bands, Big Satan (with Marc Ducret), Science Friction and Hard Cell (with Craig Taborn). Percussionist Tom Rainey has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists including John Abercrombie, Fred Hersch, Joe Lovano, and Carmen McRae. He recently released a trio CD with Andrea Parkins and Nels Cline. Percussionist Tom Rainey was born in Los Angeles, California in 1957. Since moving to New York City in 1979 he has performed at festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe with a wide range of artists including John Abercrombie, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Jane Ira Bloom, Ted Curson, Marc Ducret, George Gruntz, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Fred Hersch, Joe Lovano, Carmen McRae, WDR Big Band, and Ken Werner.
