Harriet Tubman at the Faison Firehouse Theater

Avant Jazz/rock Super Group Harriet Tubman, joined by a major artist from Brooklyn's indie rock experimentalist scene, will play July 1, 2006 at the Faison Firehouse Theater, home of Tony award winning choreographer of the Wiz, George Faison. Also performing are the Monika H. Band, Tenderhead, Boston Fielder, Nerdkween and Shaka Zulu Overdrive with Grisha Coleman.

Harriet Tubman was formed in 1998 when drummer J.T. Lewis, guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist Melvin Gibbs came together in homage to the heroic African-American who helped more than 300 slaves escape bondage. Individually these avant rockers have propelled the work of diverse artists such as Sting, Meshell N'degeocello, Butch Morris, Living Colour, Dead Prez, Cassandra Wilson and Henry Rollins. Together as Harriet Tubman, however, they create improvised music that signifies the African-American cultural experience.
