African Jazz Vocalist Somi: East Coast Tour

Since Somi is a Gemini, June would be the perfect month to kick off the exciting promotional tour of her soon to be released record Red Soil In My Eyes. You can see her concert if you are in New York, Boston, D.C., Baltimore, or Rochester at one or all of Somi's upcoming performances. Originally from Rwanda and Uganda, Somi has recently completed her sophomore recording effort Red Soil In My Eyes that celebrates her East African heritage while staying true to soul and jazz traditions. This young songwriter has been featured on CNN International, The Ananda Lewis Show, and BET, while performing at venues like Joe's Pub, B.B.King's in Times Square, The Blue Note in New York, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, and Chicago's South Shore Jazz Fest.

In addition to performing at The Blue Note's 2005 New Year's Eve celebration after Cassandra Wilson, Somi has worked with Roy Hargrove, Amel Larrieux, Lionel Loueke, and Lonnie Plaxico. With praise from Hugh Masekela, Cheik Tidiane Seck, and the generous sponsorship of the International French Cultural Center, Somi and her band were selected to tour 15 African countries in 2006. The juxtaposition of her mellifluous voice and the ferociously beautiful acoustic composition of her band creates organic textures that are at once haunting and sweet, subtle and profound.
