Jazz At Lincoln Center Hosts Star-studded 2006 Spring Gala

Monday evening, June 5, 2005, Jazz at Lincoln Center held its 5th Annual Spring Gala themed "Setting New Standards" at the Apollo Theater to benefit the hundreds of educational events, performances and broadcasts it produces each year. Hosted by BERNIE MAC, the once-in-a-lifetime concert featured stellar performances by the WYNTON MARSALIS SEPTET with TRACY CHAPMAN, JOE COCKER, JOHN LEGEND, JOHN MAYER and NATALIE MERCHANT.

The star-studded evening, co-chaired by Jazz at Lincoln Center Board Members Ashley R. Schiff and Paul C. Schorr, IV, and Harry L. Crosby, raised in excess of $1.25 million for Jazz at Lincoln Center. The gala concert kicked off with a rousing performance by the WYNTON MARSALIS SEPTET performing "What Have I Done, " written by Mr. Marsalis, followed by the uplifting vocals of JOHN LEGEND, performing "Please Baby Don't" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, " accompanied by the septet. Singer NATALIE MERCHANT then heated up the stage performing "The Worst Thing" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light." Guitarist and singer JOHN MAYER delivered a memorable performance of "I'm Gonna Find Another You" and "All Blues" and singer songwriter TRACY CHAPMAN sang "Give Me One Reason" followed by a powerful rendition of "Get Up, Stand Up." Closing the unforgettable show, JOE COCKER, delivered soulful renditions of "Feelin' Alright, " "I Put a Spell On You" and "Unchain My Heart."

Showing their support of jazz throughout the festive and elegant evening was a distinguished list of guests, including Carl Banks, Glenn Close, Stanley Crouch, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice DuBois, Michael Feinstein, Danny Glover, Mr. and Mrs. Spike Lee, Bernie Mac, Soledad O'Brien, C.C.H. Pounder, Karenna Gore Schiff, David Shaw and many others.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Board members in attendance included John Arnhold, Diane Coffey, Alan D. Cohn, Christopher Dark, Gordon J. Davis, Andre V. Duggin, Gail Engelberg, Michael Fricklas, Skip Gates, Dena Kaye, Thomas H. Lee, Edward Lewis, Shahara Ahmad-Llewellyn, Peter Norton, Charles E.
