The New Zealand Flute Convention

The New Zealand Flute Convention will be held at Massey University's Wellington campus from 3–5 June. Leading international and New Zealand flutists will gather at the New Zealand School of Music at Queen's Birthday weekend for public concerts, competitions and "master" classes.

Artistic Director Carol Hohauser says it's a great opportunity to hear the world's most popular wind instrument played by leading musicians.

Internationally recognized jazz flutist Ali Ryerson will perform in concert with guitarist Joe Beck. She will also showcase her talent in a clinic for advanced jazz flutists.

Noted performer and teacher Keith Underwood will perform a selection of music, including Bach and new work from Brazil. He is on the faculty of New York University, Mannes College of Music and the City University of New York. He is a highly sought-after flute teacher whose students rank as top professionals all over the world, including many leading New Zealand flutists.

Virginia Taylor teaches at Australian National University in Canberra and gives concerts,
classes and workshops all over the world. She has performed as soloist with almost all the Australian Orchestras and is Principal Flute in the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Carol Hohauser, who teaches flute at the New Zealand School of Music, says the flute is popular for its range, tonal variety and versatility, but mostly for its cool groove sound.

The New Zealand School of Music is a joint venture between Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington. Three of the four finalists in the Young Artists competition are NZSM students.
