Global Jazz Trio: New Release

Global Jazz Trio (Mark Hershberger-sax, Richard Smith-bass, Muruga Booker-drums) announced release of "Live In Detroit At Baker's Keyboard Lounge" on Thursday, June 6, 2006 at The Ark, 326 South Main Street, Ann Arbor, MI. Mark Hershberger and Richard Smith started their collaboration about 12 years ago playing in various University of Michigan Jazz Concerts and coffee houses while attending U of M Music School. They are all members of Detroit AFM Local 5. Hershberger is the leader of the trio and plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones, has composed, and performed for over 35 years with three CD releases on independent labels.

Hershberger's ability to bring emotion and meaning to his instrument of choice is conveyed is its most innate form with the Global Jazz Trio. Hershberger's background includes performing and studying with musical greats Sam Sanders, Hal McKinney, Jimmy Allen, Doc Holiday, Marcus Belgrave, Muruga Booker, Thad Jones, Peter MadCat Ruth, Michael Colone and Perry Robinson.

Over the last three years legendary percussionist Muruga Booker joined forces with Hershberger and Smith to form the Global Jazz Trio with an emphasis off Detroit Jazz lineage flavored with a global sound. Muruga Booker a.k.a. Steven Booker (Steven Bookvich) has performed with many greats including Hal McKinney, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie (in the 60's, ) Dave Brubeck and Perry Robinson in the MBR jazz trio. Muruga also played with the Paul Winter Consort and recorded together with them on A&M Records as well as with the Brubeck Generation, including Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan at Carnegie Hall, in New York City.

Muruga, born Steven Bookvich played with jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter at the MAC World convention in Anaheim, California... He performed with Weather Report and has continued to create a rich tapestry of world music using his incredible percussionist talents to foster greater awareness of free funk, world jazz, jazz, blues, rock, Latin and ethnic music and the healing effects of a global music. Muruga brings fiery rhythms to the trio's original jazz and global compositions. Muruga played on the Grammy nominated album by Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia, "Blues from the Rainforest, " Maruga's credits also include performances with Pharaoh Sanders at Yoshi's in Berkley California. Muruga shares the newest 2005 Chesky Record Release "CIRCLE OF DRUMS" with Babatunde Olatunji and Sikiru Adepoju in the World fusion CD that brings the flow of drums into your soul.

Hershberger in conjunction with Smith and Muruga share the production credits on their newest release, "Live in Detroit Global Jazz Trio at Baker's Keyboard Lounge" will feature the trio live at the world's oldest jazz club, the legendary Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit. Hershberger's latest release is a cohesive collection of well-known jazz standards, Global Jazz Trio originals and a Hershberger composition, Cabala's Wish, all are weaved into a fabric of unique execution and concepts from the improvisational jazz idioms.
