Lubo Alexandrov's ENJA album

The Bulgarian born guitarist, composer and singer Lubo Alexandrov has developed a unique musical style, combining the wild drive of Bulgarian Dances, the festive spirit of Gypsy songs, the emotional intensity of Turkish music with the hip cool of urban jazz grooves. He is one of the few musicians in the world playing fretless guitar, an instrument easily lending itself to the interpretation of ethnic music. Lubo Alexandrov 's musical voyage between Balkan music and other world traditions has culminated in the fulfillment of his creative dream - The Kaba Horo Ensemble.

The name Kaba Horo is made of the Turkish word "kaba" (low, rough) and the Bulgarian word "horo" (traditional Bulgarian dance) evoking the energetic/wild, ethnic flavor of the music and the diversity of musical influences on the sound of the ensemble. A truly global band the ensemble is a mix of Bulgarian, Bosnian and Montreal musicians: Lubo Alexandrov - fretless/fretted guitars, vocals; Emil Iliev - accordion, vocals; Georgi Stankov - double bass, vocals; Martin Auguste - drums, vocals; Pascal Boudreault - sax; Mark Simons - clarinet; Anes Beglerbegovic - darbuka.

In 2004/2005 Lubo Alexandrov and his band have participated in the International Jazz Festival in Montréal (2004), in the Off Jazz Festival in Montreal (2005), in the Festival Multi-Musique Montreal (2005), in the Arab World Festival (2004), in the Festival Romani Yag (Gypsy Music Festival, 2005), and in the Jazz Festival at Parc de l'Imaginaire in Aylmer (2004 and 2005). Their 2006 Canadian summer tour includes The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Toronto Harbourfront Fest, The Halifax Jazz Festival, The London Sun Fest, The Festival de Musique et le Monde - Montreal, The Guelph Hillside Fest etc. Their CD was released in April 2006 on ENJA records (world) and in Canada on Justin Time Records.
