The 2nd Annual Jazz And Poetry Marathon

In honor of National Jazz and Poetry month, Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts at Flushing Town Hall presents, otherWORDS/otherWORLDS, a marathon of jazz and poetry from Friday, April 7th through Saturday, April 8th featuring live performances of poetry influenced jazz and classical music, poetry readings, and "hands on" activities for residents of all ages. otherWORDS/otherWORLDS welcomes everyone – poets and musicians, arts lovers, kids and families to gather, listen, and jam to live music, share favorite poems, and compose and recite poetry in the language of their choosing.

Consulting Curator David Spelman, also Founder of the New York Guitar Festival, illustrates how music and poetry have been closely linked throughout history. "We are showcasing a wide range of musical and poetic voices. Our hope is to give the audience a feel for the diversity of expression in today's poetry and jazz scenes and how the two worlds can overlap in a celebratory happening, broaden appreciation for emerging talent, and support innovative collaborations among rising artists."

This year's lively festival includes: an up-close, up-tempo jazz set from The Mark Elf Trio in the main gallery as well as Tone Poetry's verse-infused classical performance spotlighting Ravel, Schubert and Chopin masterpieces. Last but not least nestled in between the evening events, the free "Jazz and Poetry Marathon" keeps the creative energy going with interactive activities for children and adults as well as inspired performances by the finest poets and jazz legends in the metropolitan area. Join in the Poetry Writing Workshop for families and kids on Saturday, April 8th from 10am-12pm followed by a 3pm performance from Flushing High School's Jazz Band. The roster of musicians and poets also includes: Bob Holman with Leni Stern, Greg Glory, Matthew Shipp with Steve Dalachinsky, Flushing High School Jazz Band, George Wallace, Yan Li, Lu Ming, Wang Yu, and Searching For Banjo - featuring Everton Sylvestor, Sherry Overholt, soprano; David Jolley, horn; and Donald Pirone, piano.

"This is an exciting opportunity for New Yorkers and the community to come together and experience the merger of two exciting and innovative art forms- jazz and poetry, " says Harvey Seifter, Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts' Executive and Artistic Director. "We are honored to be presenting a festival featuring so many wonderful musicians and poets from all over the world."
