Canadian Jazz Competition Launches

by Cindy McLeod

Toronto's premiere jazz radio station JAZZ.FM91 has partnered with international record label Verve/Universal Music Canada to launch "Project Jazz, " a competition open to music students enrolled at Canadian colleges and universities.

Jazz instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers who have never released a commercial recording are invited to apply for the prize, a package that includes $15, 000 from Verve Canada towards the production, promotion, and distribution of their first jazz CD, as well as extensive airplay and promotion on JAZZ.FM91, mentoring by a renowned jazz educator, and a feature performance in the acclaimed "Sound of Toronto" Jazz Concert Series.

A panel of jazz experts will judge the entries and select five finalists, who will perform at a live concert in Toronto this spring. The first-prize winner will be decided at the concert based on votes from the audience and judges.

Interested students are invited to submit a CD of not more than 15 minutes in length, a short bio, proof of enrollment in a Canadian college or university music program, and a completed entry form downloaded from www.jazz.fm.

Entries must be received between 9:00 a.m. April 3 and 5:00 p.m. April 21, 2006 and should be sent to:

Project Jazz, JAZZ.FM91, 4 Pardee Avenue - Unit 100, Toronto, Ontario M6K 3H5.
