Jazz at Lincoln Center will host an Open House on April 2nd

Jazz At Lincoln Center With Jazz Clubs Across New York City Celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month In April Distributing A Quarter Million "jazz Trail" Maps Of Live Jazz Events At Clubs. In an introduction to the Jazz Trail, a listings map of the hottest jazz clubs in New York City, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg says, "There is no better place to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month than the world's second home, the nation's jazz capital." To kickoff the celebration, Jazz at Lincoln Center will host an Open House at its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall at Broadway and 60th Street on April 2nd from 2-5pm. On April 5th at 10am, Jazz at Lincoln Center musicians will parade atop the observation deck of the Empire State Building in celebration of the lighting of the building cool blue by Derek E. Gordon, President and CEO of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

"During the month of April we place a special focus on celebrating jazz's talented artists who dedicate their heart and soul to become part of America's greatest indigenous art form, " said Derek E. Gordon, President and CEO of Jazz at Lincoln Center. "We want to send the message to everyone that jazz is alive and thriving in every corner of our City."

"New York City's world renowned jazz clubs are an integral part of the city's vibrant cultural scene and attract visitors from across the globe, " said Cristyne Nicholas, President & CEO of NYC & Company, the city's tourism marketing organization. "We are delighted to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month by showcasing Jazz at Lincoln Center as our Cultural Organization of the Month this April. This unique program encourages visitors and New Yorkers alike to visit the city's cultural treasures and discover why New York is the best and most diverse cultural city in the world."

To celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month, Jazz at Lincoln Center's media partner, The New York Sun and participating venues including restaurants, hotels and clubs, will feature month-long special offers, giveaways and discounts available around town Several of the Jazz Trail maps will have a golden ticket, which will award the winner free tickets to a performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

On April 2, at the Open House at Frederick P. Rose Hall, XM Satellite Radio will host tours of the in-house broadcast studios and offer other special prizes during this festive family-friendly Sunday afternoon. Dan Nimmer, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's own pianist, will perform live with his trio in Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, educational activities will be held to introduce families with young children to this great art form. Entertainment for kids of all ages will also include meeting artists, free conga lessons, CD giveaways and more!

Leading jazz educational institutions will also be partnering with Jazz at Lincoln Center during Jazz Appreciation Month, including Juilliard Jazz Studies, the Manhattan School of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, New York University, and William Patterson University of New Jersey. These educational institutions will showcase student groups as part of the Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola Monday night UPSTARTS! series during the month of April. The educational institutions will also present free concerts around the city and in New Jersey during the month of April.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio with Ed Bradley will bring Jazz Appreciation Month to listeners across the country as well as in the New York area with "One Family of Jazz." CBS Newsman Ed Bradley hosts as an all-star line-up of artists celebrate the grand opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center's new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. The Marsalis family - Ellis, Branford, Delfayeo, Jason and Wynton - are joined by Tony Bennett, Roy Haynes, Abbey Lincoln, Kenny Barron and Marcus Roberts to celebrate the world's first performing arts facility designed for the sound of jazz. The program will include "Body and Soul, " "Sing, Sing, Sing, " "Lost in the Stars, " and more. The program will be broadcast locally at 6:30 PM April 10th on "Jazz 88" WBGO 88.5FM

Other Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio programs in April will feature the music of Art Blakey and Charles Mingus as well as performances by Jimmy Scott and Carmen Lundy. These programs are broadcast on more than 250 outlets across North America.
