Manfred Eicher wins Jazzahead Award

ECM founder/producer Manfred Eicher has been announced as the first winner of the Jazzahead Škoda Award, a prize presented in the context of Jazzahead, the new German jazz event introduced in Bremen in March.

The award will be presented at the Bremen Congress hall on March 24th, prior to a concert by the Bobo Stenson Trio.

Event director Ulrich Beckerhoff says, “It was an artistic decision – the award should go to an individual who has rendered outstanding services to jazz and its reputation as a cultural asset. There are good reasons for choosing Manfred Eicher as the first award winner. His ECM label stands for one of the few really unmistakable profiles within the world of jazz and jazz-related music.” Peter Schulze, Jazzahead project consultant, adds, “With the Jazzahead Škoda Award we are acknowledging Manfred Eicher’s outstanding qualities as a producer, label manager and promoter, particularly in the field of European jazz.”

Jazzahead will be held from March 23 to March 26. It is divided into diverse “modules”, including a festival with the German Jazz Meeting (sponsored by the Goethe-Institut and Kulturstiftung des Bundes), a management symposium, a conference, an exhibition, and a meeting place for associations, all of which will, its organizers say, “draw members of the world of music, the media, industry and politics to Bremen”.
