Improvisation Non-Stop

2006 will likely see very few if any creative releases and jazz and rock festivals this year will pretty much be a repeat of past events--with the exception of one spectacular event in Italy at the Castle Brando, located in the foothills of the Veneto, this June, 9, 10, 11, 12.

In the last two years hosts Chris Boulet and guitarist Willie Oteri have been promoting the worlds longest totally improvised non-stop musical events featuring some of the worlds top musicians; 33 1/3 in 2004 and 45 A and B sides in 2005, all held in large clubs in Padua, Italy. This year Boulet has managed to obtain Italy's largest castle, the Castle Brando, for the next event, “78”. Yes, that's right, 78 hours non-stop of totally improvised music with close to 50 rotating musicians featuring King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto, bass master Stu Hamm, Zappa alumni Mike Keneally, producer/musician Ronan Chris Murphy, German drummer Schroeder, Warr guitarist Markus Reuter and a plethora of jazz and rock talent from Italy and around the globe with many more names to be announced.

Boulet and Oteri have been trying to obtain as much jazz talent as possible to offset the rock side of things but with little success. According to Oteri, this year would have seen the likes of John McLaughlin, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clark and George Duke but all had other engagements. Hopefully some will make the list for the next event “100.”

Oteri's take on the matter: “It is surprising to me, having invited countless names in jazz, how many people who are known or marketed as improvisers tend to dismiss this event and talents known more to rock fans tend to embrace it and have proven to be tireless creative sources in our past events. Perhaps we need to re-evaluate the term improviser. This is not just blowing a solo over a standard, which is where many of us tend to find a comfort zone. This is true improvisation and not some jamband fest.”
