London Under an Anatolian Sky

Leading Turkish instrumentalist Erkan Ogur returns with his Anatolian jazz trio Telvin (Ilkin Deniz double bass, Turgut Alp Bekoglu drums, Yan Vagh ten-string fretless guitar) for his fourth performance at the South Bank Centre, his UK debut with the trio. He will perform Wednesday 15 March 2006 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Highly regarded for his interpretations of ancient folk music and collaborations with musicians such as Djivan Gasparyan as well as for his film scores, Ogur expresses himself in Telvin on the instrument with which he is most associated and of which he is Turkey's undisputed master - the fretless guitar. Whether acoustic or electric, the instrument has an inherent gentleness and can play oriental non-tempered scales, creating a unique and magical experience with affinities to the successful Metheny/Haden project Under a Missouri Sky. With Telvin, Ogur draws on his experience of two years' touring performing the blues in Mississippi, as well as Turkish folk music and jazz.

The popular Parisian contemporary acoustic guitarist Yan Vagh provides support. Playing steel-string and 12-string fretless guitars and blending vocals into the guitar sound, Vagh performs music which is as much about sonorities as it is about carefully crafted compositions.
