Fisk Jubillee Singers: new concert

The Fisk Jubilee Singers will perform Saturday, March 4, 2006 at The New York Historical Society. Through the Fisk Jubilee Singers the Negro Spiritual was introduced to the world and established as a unique American contribution to music.

The Jubilee Singers also helped establish Fisk University as an educational institution with a great tradition of musical excellence and cultural integrity. Along the way, the earliest Singers earned the money needed to keep the doors open to the only university of its time dedicated to the education of “young men and women irrespective of color.”

Paul T. Kwami is the current Musical Director (since 1994) of the Singers. Over the last decade the Singers have been featured in several documentaries and have performed throughout the United States (including at the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center) and the world. The current ensemble is made up of students from all over the world.
