New York Jazz Saxophonist Chris Potter Visits Canada

byCindy McLeod

New York saxophonist Chris Potter visits Canada this week for shows in Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton. Chris Potter is often cited by critics, musicians, and fans alike as the finest saxophonist of his generation.

Chris Potter has built a long list of impressive credits and garnered numerous awards for his work, including having his 1993 release ‘Vertigo’ being named one of the year’s top ten CDs by both Jazziz and The New York Times. He also performed on Steely Dan’s Grammy-nominated, gold album ‘Two Against Nature’, with the following tour resulting in the live CD, ‘Alive in America’. He received his own Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Solo for his work on Joanne Brackeen’s ‘Pink Elephant Magic’. He’s the youngest recipient ever to receive the annual Danish Jazzpar Prize.

Although he’s performed extensively with the incredible bassist/composer Dave Holland’s various ensembles since the early ’90’s, he’s toured the globe as leader since early 2001. An unabashedly rhythmic player, Potter’s most recent CD ‘Traveling Mercies’ is a groove-oriented date that makes no sacrifices or compromises in the quest for musical integrity and communication with his audience.
