ENJA releases Franco Ambrosetti's new CD

German label Enja Releases Franco Ambrosetti's new CD Liquid Gardens. The personal of this project is: Franco Ambrosetti (trumpet, flugelhorn), Gianluca Ambrosetti (soprano sax), Dado Moroni (piano), Sébastien Boisseau (bass) Daniel Humair (drums) Michael Zisman (bandoneon). Sinfonietta della Svizzera Italiana directed by Sergio Ferrio

Time and again Swiss trumpetist Franco Ambrosetti has been compared to Miles Davis. Like Miles, Franco has chosen the trumpet as his instrument. Like Miles, Franco hails from a wealthy family. Like Miles, he sometimes showed a distinct preference for fast cars from Italy. And it was Miles himself who called his colleague from Switzerland's Italian-speaking community "the only white trumpet player who sounds like a black man". However, contrary to Miles, Franco over the years has kept to his personal hardbop philosophy. A leading German newspaper referred to him as "the most elegant hardbop trumpeter Europe has ever known." His 2003 album "European Legacy", recorded with a personnel similar to the new one, was awarded "Jazz CD of the month" by Germany's Stereoplay magazine and received highest ratings from critics in several countries.

A passionate club player since the 1960s, Franco Ambrosetti knows quite well that recording an album is something totally different than a live gig. "For a CD, you need to have a project", Franco says. He even likes to compare producing an album to making a movie: "The final result should be, for the listener, like taking a journey through your musical world, where each song has a specific character." The music on his new album “Liquid Gardens” includes solos and duos, combo efforts, romantic jazz standards for fluegelhorn and symphony orchestra, even poems and singing whales. There are aggressive and impressionistic, even surrealistic moments on the album. There are strangely colored sounds coming from Ambrosetti jr.'s obstinate soprano sax, Michael Zisman's lyrical bandoneon or Daniel Humair's versatile percussion playing. Changeable and unpredictable, this recording has a pastel mood and a sensitivity of its own kind. "Imagine yourself underwater", Franco suggests, "floating from one magic garden to the other in the depth of the ocean and enjoy appeasement, fulfilment and peace. Like water, this music should pervade every remote corner of your soul."
