Vandermark 5 at The Cinema in Philadelphia

Vandermark 5 with Ken Vandermark, reeds; Dave Rempis, saxophone; Fred Lonberg-Holm, cello; Kent Kessler, bass; and Tim Daisy, drums will play tonight, Thursday, February 2 with Leroy Jenkins, Myra Melford, Kahil El'Zabar at The Cinema In Philadelphia .

MacArthur fellow Ken Vandermark formed the Vandermark 5 nearly 10 years ago as an outlet for the concepts he developed over the years working with NRG Ensemble, the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet, and ALLY. During the past nine years the quintet's line-up has evolved and now includes the extraordinary saxophonist Dave Rempis, who replaced Mars Williams; Tim Daisy masterfully stepping up and meeting high demands on percussion; and most recently cellist and improvisation master Fred Lonberg-Holm (Wilco, Jim O'Rourke) joins the band upon Jeb Bishop's exit. Each member has years of performance experience with various approaches to improvised music.

The range of instrumentation and stylistic potential held by this unit allows Vandermark to write charts that run the gamut of musical possibilities. While he incorporates elements of jazz history, contemporary composition, funk, rock and traditional music from around the world into the group's material, the focus remains on improvisation. Each composition is scored to allow ample room for the members to interpret and reinterpret his writing with their own spontaneous and unique ideas.
