Orange prepare their new album at SugarHill

Pop/Rock band Orange Is In spent many hours working on their new album at the legendary SugarHill Recording Studios, between the months of June to December 2005. The band recorded their basic tracks with SugarHill’s Tracking Engineer Josh Applebee and utilized their home recording facility to record guitar overdubs and vocals. They finally mixed with SugarHill’s Senior Engineer Steve Christensen; Christensen has worked with plenty of popular Houston bands including Southern Backtones, Tody Castillo and John Evans Band.

This will be their full-length debut album titled Another Lame Semi-Tragedy and includes an interesting mix of guitars and violin. “Having a violin in a rock band is already pretty unusual, but mainly we went for a natural rock sound, ” commented Bass player Jeff Balke.

The album was produced by Balke and guitarist Chris Rogers featuring guest musicians including Ian Varley (Keyboard player for Funk/Jazz band Drop Trio) and Amy Price (Violin player for Paisley Close).

Balke also discussed some of the stranger effects and recording techniques they explored, while at SugarHill, “The weirdest thing we did was run the violin on one track through a bunch of guitar effects and an amp. Not only did it sound just like the demented circus effect we were looking for, but it sounded like a sound effect from a 1950’s sci-fi movie.”

Orange Is In, were recently voted as one of the five finalists in the Best Original Music category of the Houston Chronicle’s annual Ultimate Houston Reader’s survey and they plan to perform and promote the new album through live tours throughout the US and on the Internet.

Their album will be released on January 28th and will be supported by a CD release show at popular Houston venue Rudyards on the same day.
