Detroit: Motor City Jazz Festival

Jazz at Lincoln Center continues to celebrate the jazz cities of America during the 2005-06 season themed Jazz From Coast to Coast with the week-long Detroit: Motor City Jazz Festival from January 10-15 at Frederick P. Rose Hall on Broadway at 60th St. in New York City and throughout Michigan with performances by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in East Lansing on January 25 and Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents the Music of Miles Davis in Detroit on January 27.

As a highlight of the festival at Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra will premiere an original long-form composition by featured guest artist Yusef Lateef during the Detroit: Motor City Jazz concerts on January 12, 13 and 14 at 8pm. The world-renowned big band will also showcase the jazz style and the bebop revolution for which Detroit has long been known. Joining the band for these concerts will be some of the most talented Detroit jazz musicians on the scene: trumpet player Marcus Belgrave and bassist Ron Carter and who were major figures in the early Detroit jazz scene, along with special guests Curtis Fuller (trombone), Charles McPherson (alto sax) and Yusef Lateef (tenor sax, flute and oboe). A small group consisting of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Detroit guest artists will perform selections specially written by Ron Carter for these concerts.

In Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, as part of the Detroit: Motor City Jazz Festival, Lewis Nash, Renee Rosnes, Steve Nelson and Peter Washington will perform the music of legendary Detroit legends Tommy Flanagan and Milt Jackson from January 10-15 at 7:30pm, 9:30pm and 11:30pm.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra will then perform at the Michigan State University Auditorium in E. Lansing on January 25. Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents the Music of Miles Davis will make a stop in Detroit on January 27 as trumpeter Eddie Henderson will lead an ensemble comprised of Wayne Escoffery (tenor saxophone), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Dave Kikoski (piano), Edward Howard (bass) and on various dates, two alto players, Steve Wilson and Antonio Hart.
