New Zealand International Arts Festival

The bold line-up of events that take place in Wellington this summer (24 Feb – 19 March 2006) has been received with great excitement. There has a been a rush to get hold of the 2006 Festival programmes brochures since the 2nd November launch, and the Festival website has had a record number of hits.

Jazz legend and 16-time Grammy Award winner Pat Metheny, the Lexus Season of Alan Bennett’s award-winning play The History Boys, and death defying French trapeze artists Les Arts Sauts, proudly sponsored by New Zealand Post are just a few of the hot tickets. The Festival expects these performances to sell very well before Christmas, based on initial responses and international box office records.

The 12.5 million dollar Festival attracts more than 300, 000 people from all over the country and overseas. From Spain to Guinea, France to India and Italy to New Zealand, the 2006 Festival programme features 275 performance and 121 events handpicked from the best the world has to offer. There is a show for everyone.

As well as s whole range of ticketed events, there are also a number of free events for the whole family including the Toyota Picnics in the Park where you can sample some of the international and local highlights of the Festival. The acclaimed aerial photographic exhibition Earth from Above by French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand “is most certainly one of the highlights of the Festival programme, ” says Carla van Zon, the Festival’s Artistic Director. Situated in Waitangi Park, the exhibition of 120 stunning photographs is free to the public and on display day and night for the entire length of the Festival.
