William Vacchiano, 93 dead

William Vacchiano, 93, former trumpeter with the New York Philharmonic died September 19, of respiratory failure in Manhattan. Vacchiano joined the staff of Julliard Music School in 1935. Miles Davis attend Julliard in 1945; Vacchiano and Miles had arguments that became legendary. He tutored Marsalis years later and once said: "He potentially could be the greatest of all time". In 2002, Vacchiano retired from Julliard, estimated having taught 2, 000 students over 67 years. With the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein he recorded trumpet solos on Shostakovichs' "Concerto No.1 for Piano and Orchestra Op.35. Columbia records. Andre Previn was the pianist. Vacchiano published trumpet books and had a line of trumpet mouthpieces.
