Saxophonist and Composer Layla Angulo Live at The Triple Door

Thursday July 14Th. CD Release concert featuring the Femmale composer, saxophonist, and musical director Layla Angulo and her band. Concert starts 7:30pm.

Born in Louisiana, raised between Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, Layla Angulo began playing the piano at age five, the sax at ten, and was performing in jazz clubs in Boston at fourteen. Layla continued her studies at Cornish College of the Arts under Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester, and Randy Halberstadt. It was during this period Layla met and has developed a long-standing musical relationship with Miles Davis's saxophone player, Bennie Maupin.

She lived in Spain for several months, soaking up the culture, playing with Spanish and European musicians, widening her musical education and creating a hunger for eclectic musical styles and influences. From the hunger came an unquenchable desire to make her own music.

The sound on her debut album, THE LAYLA ANGULO SEXTET, is exhilarating, progressive, sophisticated and refreshingly complex. She has taken the rhythms of Afro-Peruvian and Latin jazz into entirely new realms, deep into a musical landscape few musicians have gone. And this was only her first CD!

Since the release of her first CD, Layla and her Latin Jazz Band have played many of the clubs and major venues in the Pacific Northwest, from the legendary Jazz Alley and Paramount Theatre?s 75th Anniversary Gala with Tony Bennett, to all the festivals from Folklife to Bumbershoot. Layla was honored by having been nominated for Seattle's Best Band of 2003 by the Seattle Weekly.

With an intensely loyal and growing fan base, Layla and the band create a thrilling musical experience wherever they perform. The fierce enthusiasm and encouragement of her fans keep pushing Layla to even higher musical planes and she is, in fact, going back into the studio to record her follow-up CD, which has been released in May of 2005.
