Jive at Five Ready to Swing and Jazz Up Summer Concert Series

Jive at Five, a Michigan-based band, will bring its swing dance and jazz style of music to the Beyond the Ponds summer concert series at 6:30 p.m. July 14. The family-oriented Beyond the Ponds concerts, which are free and open to the public, are held in the Mount Pleasant town square. The concert series is co-sponsored by CMU’s University Events, the Mount Pleasant Downtown Business Association and the Wheatland Music Organization.

String bass player Tom Ball, pianist and organist David Raffenaud, and guitar and trumpet player and vocalist Frank Youngman formed Jive at Five in 1992. Now, there are an additional four members in the group: tenor, baritone saxophone and flute player Dan Giacobassi, tenor and alto saxophone player Gene Harris, guitar player and vocalist Mark Schrock, and percussion player Dave Zerbe.

“We’re bringing Jive at Five back by popular demand, ” said Robert Ebner, University Events director and coordinator of the series. “They played at Beyond the Ponds before and were a great success.”

The concert series brings the community together for an enjoyable night of music.
“This is a long running series which has been very successful, ” said Ebner. “Since the series was moved to the town center, it has an old-fashioned town feeling.”

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble will headline the second performance of the summer concert series at 6:30 p.m. July 21 in the town square.
