4th Rochester International Jazz Festival Opens Friday June 10

The fourth annual Rochester International Jazz Festival returns to Rochester June 10-18 for a spectacular nine-day event featuring more than 100 concerts and 500 musicians representing 15-plus countries.

One of the fastest growing and most multi-dimensional festivals offered in the world, the Festival will offer something for everyone - from new sounds to familiar favorites. Among the performers are Sonny Rollins, Chris Botti, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea and Chaka Khan. Leading musicians from around the world will begin to arrive in Rochester Friday, June 10 for the start of the nine-day Rochester International Jazz Festival.

Friday Highlights

Sonny Rollins - Eastman Theatre 8 PM. The legendary tenor sax giant has played music with the majesty of a Greek God, and today remains one of the few surviving icons from a golden era of jazz that will probably never be equaled.

Bill Frisell Trio - Kilbourn Hall 6 & 10 PM. The recent Grammy winner is one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music. Featured on the July cover of Downbeat Magazine.

Yggdrasil - Big Tent 6 & 10 From the Faroe Islands, Yggdrasil juggles jazz, Faroese dance tunes, children’s rhymes and Christian hymns, Shakespearean sonnets, birdcall actuality, Greenlander kayak vehicles and Swedish drinking songs.

Paula West - Max of Eastman Place 6:15 & 10 PM With a particular dusky soulfulness, singer West has captured the hearts of critics and audiences alike from coast to coast.

Hilton Ruiz Trio - Montage Grille 6 & 10 PM One of the finest pianists in Afro-Cuban jazz, Hilton Ruiz is also an expert bop player.

Dennis Parker - Jazz Street Stage - 6 PM Born and raised in London, England, he has been playing and singing the blues for over thirty years.

Autorickshaw - Jazz Street Stage - 9:15 PM This world music ensemble, whose integration of South Asian tradition with jazz and other popular music forms, represents an innovative and refreshing new standard.

Sex Mob - Milestones 6:30 & 10 PM Fusing lovingly academic excursions with good time party music. The downtown scene's late night hang of choice, a favorite of fans, musicians, and critics alike.
