Scofield & Mehldau Trios at Jazz at Lincoln Center

February 2, 2005 (New York, NY) Guitarist John Scofield and pianist Brad Mehldau bring their separate trios to Jazz at Lincoln Center for their Rose Theater debut on March 11-12, 2005.

Previously recorded outings by Mr. Scofield have found him performing in elaborate settings, from plugged-in and electronic jam bands to full orchestral settings, but this time around, he returns to the basic jazz trio with bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Bill Stewart. As one of today’s most prolific jazz guitarists, Mr. Scofield honed his chops with the likes of Miles Davis in his younger days. “I wanted to make a real jazz-improvising statement in a live situation with two of my favorite musicians,” Mr. Scofield says. “It’s really challenging. You don’t rely on arrangements as much as on the way the group plays together. You don’t rely on anything other than good playing, and you know there’s no lifejacket or safety net involved. That doesn’t happen as often in a studio setting: I think the big difference is the audience. There is a symbiotic affinity between the artists and the audience that makes for something special.”

Joining Mr. Scofield on the bill is young, vibrant pianist Brad Mehldau. The Brad Mehldau Trio consists of Mehldau (piano), Larry Grenadier (bass) and Jeff Ballard (drums). As JazzTimes magazine says, “Brad Mehldau is the most highly acclaimed jazz artist to have emerged in the last decade.” In 1994, Mr. Mehldau gained notoriety as a member of the Joshua Redman Quartet (with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blades). The next year, he made his major label debut on Warner Brothers with his release, Introducing Brad Mehldau. In 2004, he released his eighth album. At age 34, he currently lives in Newburgh, New York. Both John Scofield and Brad Mehldau were raised in Connecticut.
