Reedists Byron Asher and Tomas Majcherski's Sonic Chambers Quartet announces new album and shares first single For Immediate Release: Sonic Chambers Quartet announces the release of their second album, Spontaneous Situations, on November 6, 2026. On this independently released disc, the group explores alternative compositional frameworks for improvisation, guided by text pieces, non-traditional notation, and extensive rehearsal conversation. Recorded in 2025, the record features co-leaders Byron Asher and Tomas Majcherski performing on seven different woodwind instruments total. This textural diversity is underscored by the rhythm section elasticity of bassist Matt Booth and drummer Doug Garrison as they explore traditional roles and extended techniques. Spontaneous Situations documents the development of Sonic Chambers Quartet as a cohesive group. While their first album presents the band as the brainchild of the co-leaders' shared vision, this release undercuts that leader-sideperson hierarchy, leaning on the improvisational spirit of the group as a whole. Across the 12 tracks, the band imagines a new sonic universe for themselves, taking influence from soundscapes of the natural world, global music traditions, our solar system's electromagnetic waves, ambient music, serialism, and traditions of American free improvisation. The resulting album is an experiment in collectivity, and an example of what can be achieved when a group with an established working relationship sets out to "compose" a free improvisation record. ABOUT THE BAND New Orleans-based Sonic Chambers Quartet was formed in 2023 and performs original music at the nexus of new composition and free improvisation. Though this band project is fresh, the co-leaders have known each other and performed together for over 10 years and additionally share non-musical interests in avant garde theater and philosophy and religion. Their collaboration is richly informed by this history, grounding their music in dialogues around performance, spirituality and collectivity. Their debut record Kiss of the Earth was released in April 2025 on 577 Records and hailed by Dave Sumner of Bandcamp Daily as "wonderful, wildly melodic and a rhythmic dynamo." |
