Mark O'Leary Nick Drake Mark O'Leary on Nick Drake. Nick Drake featured here on the promo poster for Poetic Eras available https://tibproditaly.bandcamp.com/album/poetic-eras With the release of the making of five leaves left, featuring outtakes and other materials which is a treasure throve for Nick's many fans who continue to idolize him. The only film footage available is of him walking through a festival. Nick Drake was one of our favourite acoustic guitarist, nonpareil, perhaps only for Michael Hedges. Chris De Burgh auditioned for Nick's band, they were contemporaries at Marlborough College. Ironically, Nick was a star athlete at Marlborough and was born in Burma. Nick's music was compelling, we were enthralled by it. Enchanting, encaptivating, inspiring. Some of my acoustic 12 string intros; the vibe, the mood, the temperament, the feeling, (not necessarily the notes) were inspired by Nick Drake. It was always electric guitar or electronics or soundscape or environmental recording (maybe prose/poetry) I was asked about in interviews, but some of my acoustic material has been very successful. I was never asked, who inspired you or what is the epistemological source of your acoustic dalliances. But maybe not the notes, but most definitely in terms of the je ne sais quoi, I would have to say Nick Drake. |
