Out today: Joep van Rhijn's Between Fact & Fiction In captivating duo with Korean pianist Yoonseung Cho, trumpeter Joep van Rhijn embraces the flugelhorn for Between Fact and Fiction, out on March 19, 2025. In the spirit of musical storytelling, Korea-based Van Rhijn offers nine original compositions and one new arrangement by Cho, inspired by the musical tension between, indeed, fact and fiction. “This album is a search for balance between transparency and clarity in music, ” the composer explains, “while leaving space for the listener’s imagination.” Journeying from stories to memories of the past and from feelings to experiences and back, Van Rhijn creates the feeling of riding a musical caroussel, watching the sunrise, or going on an adventure, encapsulated in compositions and melodies that are sometimes bold, sometimes sensitive, and always enchanting. About Joep van Rhijn Joep van Rhijn (1984) is a creative trumpet / flugelhorn player, improviser and composer. His character is clearly noticeable through his warm tone and lyrical playing. Van Rhijn has a minimalistic approach to music with a focus on detail. He was born and raised in The Netherlands, where he first started playing the trumpet at a young age in the local wind band. During a high-school exchange year in the U.S. Van Rhijn got an introduction to jazz music, which inspired him to continue studying music at the Prince Claus Conservatory in The Netherlands. After his studies he was based in Amsterdam active in the Dutch music scene, touring with groups like The Jig, Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation, Jamal Thomas Band and Flower To The People. In 2012 Van Rhijn moved to South Korea where he has been active with his trio, his band Blow Out and his new group LIME. He released three albums as a leader and played at the major festivals and venues in Korea. He has composed, arranged and recorded music for Korean traditional music artists, modern dance groups and K-pop artists. |
