Mark O'Leary / Ståle Storløkken / Stein Inge Braekhus St Fin Barre's

Mark O'Leary on Leo Records and a new departure. It's been recorded in the magnificent Cork's Cathedral St. Fin Barre's. Mark chose his partners very carefully. The church organist Stale Storlokken is a member of Norwegian cult band Supersilent as well as member of Terje Rypdal's trio. Stein Inge Braekhus is a sensitive drummer who works with subtle nuances and dynamic breaks of tension. Although it was recorded in 2002 it marks yet another phase in Mark's recorded journey. Arild R Andersen review
The Irish guitarist Mark OLeary has experienced an international breakthrough in recent years. He has played with a number of high-profile performers, including Paul Bley, Bill Bruford, Nils Økland and Kenny Wheeler, and he combines technical brilliance with an exquisite sense of discreet coloring. On this release, OLeary has drawn into Saint Fin Barres Cathedral in Cork, the city he himself comes from, and he has been inspired by Olivier Messiaen, JS Bach and Arvo Pärt.

Ståle Storløkken sits behind the organ and lets the caution roar through the pipes. He brings out a quality in OLeary's game that has rarely been heard. The big loop gives direction to the improvisations and sugarcoats the guitarist's excesses. The stormy statements Mark OLeary has to resort to can be both defended and understood in this context. Drummer Stein Inge Braekhus shows responsive thriftiness and underpins the movements in the music.
