OKAN hits NPR's 'El Tiny Desk' as part of Latin Heritage Month

For their Tiny Desk debut, OKAN performs four songs from their full-length latest release, which was included in top album of the year lists by NPR’s AltLatino. Le Monde Latin and CBC Music.

After winning their second JUNO (Canada’s Grammy equivalent) for their third album, Okantomi, OKAN has been invited to perform for prestigious presenters such as New York’s Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Carnegie Hall’s Citywide Series, NYC’s Winter Jazzfest, Atlanta Jazz, and San Francisco Jazz

Following a highly successful cross-country tour supporting the Grammy-winning Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, OKAN, currently doing a 5-month artistic residency in Miami, has been invited back for a second tour leg, supporting the band on seven September dates in California, Utah, Oregon, and Washington.

After winning their second JUNO (Canada’s Grammy equivalent) for their third album, Okantomi, OKAN has been invited to perform for prestigious presenters such as New York’s Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Carnegie Hall’s Citywide Series, NYC’s Winter Jazzfest, Atlanta Jazz, and San Francisco Jazz.

Previous editions of Tiny Desk’s Latin Heritage month programming has showcased the work of artists such as Camila Cabello, Susana Baca and Farruko. OKAN is proud to count themselves among Latin Canadian artists who have been featured on the series including Jessie Reyez, Alex Cuba and Lido Pimienta.

“OKAN being part of the Tiny Desk Concert series was a dream come true, an incredible milestone in representing the Afro-Cuban diaspora to NPR / Tiny Desk viewers around the globe, ” says OKAN co-leader, the Grammy and Latin Grammy-nominated violinist and singer Elizabeth Rodriguez.

“Having the opportunity to tell our story, talk about what inspires us and share the Afro-Cuban chants that are interwoven through our music, was a great honor. It was also amazing to share the Tiny Desk spotlight with other women artists from Cuba." (Camila Cortina on piano and Yissy García on drums). Chilean-born Gerson Lazo-Quiroga plays bass.

Elizabeth’s co-leader (and wife), the percussionist and vocalist (also Grammy and Latin Grammy Nominated) Magdelys Savigne adds, “We’re thrilled that this is happening as part of Latin Heritage month which is so important in increasing the visibility of Latin music and especiallyAfro Cuban music"
