Pat Philips Presents JOAO BOSCO “Brazilian Legend” Celebrating 50 years + @ BIRDLAND June 4-8

Joao Bosco , Guitarist/Vocalist has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades since the 60’s when he first began composing and performing . In the early 90’s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US and since then has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, among others.

He is also one of Brazil’s formidable songwriters, having supplied Elis Regina with some of her best material. Bosco stepped out into the performance limelight ad became one of the most compelling figures in Brazilian music for years.

Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Joao Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of not leaving for long periods of time. His music, though rooted in Brazil’s classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines Rock and Roll, Jazz, African sounds and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is.

His voice, full of soul, sings Brazil’s melodies with the blood of African slaves in his veins and weeps melodic songs from his Lebanese ancestors as well. This ethnic mix makes Joao Bosco a very unique artist.

He came to Rio and was introduced to Jobim, Chico Buarque, sounds of Bossa Nova, and worked with superstar Elis Regina and more. Together with poet Aldir Blanc, they composed a vast repertoire, now considered classics.

At Birdland, Joao Bosco performs with Guitarist Ricardo Silveira, Francisco ‘Kiko’ Freitas on Drums, and Gustavo Dellagerisi on Bass, his regular players.
