Program unveiled for 44th edition of Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, June 27-July 6 André 3000, Norah Jones, Hiatus Kaiyote, Laufey, Robert Glasper (L'Événement spécial Rio Tinto), and Orville Peck (Le Grand Événement TD) are among the headliners of the 44th Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (FIJM), presented by TD Bank Group in collaboration with Rio Tinto. From June 27 to July 6, over 350 shows will rock the heart of the city, and two-thirds will be free of charge. With this year’s modern, all-encompassing and diverse program, the FIJM proves once again that jazz knows no boundaries. “In various areas of society, the notion of borders is fading away, and the same goes for our beloved jazz. Our incredible programming team has the duty and the pleasure of reflecting this healthy evolution, ” says Maurin Auxéméry, now in his second year at the helm of FIJM programming. “Jazz constantly takes its cues from current music styles, and it in turn seeps into rock, pop and hip-hop, to name just a few. This interdependence is really exciting, as it testifies to the relevance of jazz in our soundscape, ” he adds. As for the major trends in the 2024 program, the “traditional” jazz scene is more than well represented, with big-name artists like Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Marcus Miller, along with other special guests featured in several large-scale indoor and outdoor series. The Festival team is pleased to once again invite some of the favourite artists of FIJM regulars, like Pink Martini, Norah Jones and Jesse Cook. As always, the local scene is very much front and centre, featuring Alexandra Stréliski, Elisapie, Geoffroy, Dominique Fils-Aimé, Apashe with live orchestra and Leif Vollebekk. And Kid Koala is back for an encore performance of the not-to-be-missed Storyville Mosquito show, which was given in a series of sold-out performances during MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE. The popularity of hip-hop continues to grow among young music fans, which is why the FIJM lends it an ever-greater place in its programming, with artists like Killer Mike and Erick The Architect. Several artists from Africa, including Etran de l'Aïr, The Brother Moves On and Vieux Farka Touré, as well as representatives of the global music scene will light up the stage at the FIJM this summer. This edition will have us moving to the sound of flutes, as several renowned artists such as SHABAKA, Chief Adjuah (Christian Scott) and André 3000 swap their typical instruments for this wind instrument. For festival-goers who are eager to discover something new, the FIJM programming team members have come up with a few of their own personal recommendations. FREDDIE GIBBS x EL MICHELS AFFAIR LES PERFORMANCES TD Sunday, June 30, 2024, 9:30 p.m. Scène TD Free! A highly respected figure in hip-hop in its purest form joins forces with a soulful vintage band for a show at the FIJM. It promises to be an exciting event, as the band El Michels Affair is renowned for its many collaborations with rappers. ANDRÉ 3000 New Blue Sun LIVE ÉVÉNEMENT SPÉCIAUX TD Sunday, June 30, 2024, 7:30 p.m. Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts André 3000, one member of the popular Outkast duo, surprised everyone in November 2023 with an unexpected concept album in which he swapped his voice for the flute! At the intersection of new age, jazz and ambient music, his New Blue Sun is intriguing—to say the least. A gentle but one-of-a-kind onstage experience, it’s sure to leave a lasting impression. A big catch for the FIJM. HIATUS KAIYOTE LES PERFORMANCES TD Thursday, June 27, 2024, 9:30 p.m. Scène TD Free! Quebec aficionados of this Australian band will say, “Finally!” The wait may have been (too) long, but it was well worth it. Undoubtedly one of the programming team’s best catches this year, Hiatus Kayiote presents explosive R&B-funk-jazz, performed by wild instrumentalists pumping out unbridled music at the highest level. ANA MOURA LES GRANDS CONCERTS RIO TINTO Wednesday, July 3, 2024, 8 p.m. Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts Fado star Ana Moura dazzles the world with her deep, moving voice. An artist who is confident that she is bringing something new to the table, she released Casa Guilhermina, her seventh studio album — the first she wrote herself — in 2022, which made her famous beyond Portugal. AL DI MEOLA Opening act: Frank O'Sullivan LES GRANDS CONCERTS RIO TINTO Saturday, June 29, 2024, 8 p.m. Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts This virtuoso American guitar player has been a jazz fusion icon since the ’70s. Renowned for his impeccable technique and nimble execution, Di Meola blends jazz, rock, flamenco and world music as he tirelessly seeks new soundscapes and attempts to push back the limits of his instrument. CORTEX Jazz Is Dead presents Cortex LES COULEURS DELTA AIR LINES en collaboration avec THE GAZETTE Friday, June 28, 2024, 8 p.m. Club Soda A French jazz-funk band founded in the 1970s by pianist Alain Mion, Cortex is known for its unique blend of jazz, funk and soul. They recorded several influential albums, but their Troupeau Bleu (1975) gained a cult following for its innovation and rich sound aesthetic. Artists like Tyler, the Creator, Rick Ross and Madlib are among their fans. Decades later, the band is now ready to take its rightful place as a major influencer. KEYON HARROLD Trumpet Summit with special guests Theo Croker, Maurice Brown and Rémi Cormier JAZZ BEAT en collaboration avec CBC MUSIC Sunday, June 30, 2024, 9 p.m. Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, Place des Arts A fantastic show featuring up-and-coming young trumpet stars! Keyon Harrold has worked with the likes of Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Rihanna, while Maurice Brown has rubbed shoulders with Anderson .Paak, Cee Lo Green, Aretha Franklin and De La Soul. Future jazz star Theo Croker has played with J. Cole, Ari Lennox and the rapper Common. This gathering of industry luminaries will also feature Radio-Canada’s 2023 Jazz Revelation winner Rémi Cormier. AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE DUO WITH DAVE HOLLAND JAZZ BEAT en collaboration avec CBC MUSIC Saturday, June 29, 2024, 9 p.m. Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, Place des Arts Two different generations come together in this unique duo as they share the stage, constantly striving to strike a unique sound in their music. It promises to be a rich dialogue between Holland, one of the most versatile and prolific bassists/composers in jazz history, and Akinmusire, a young Californian composer and trumpeter. LA LOM GROOVE RIO TINTO Thursday, June 27, 2024, 8pm and 10 p.m. Scène Rio Tinto Free! Do you like Hermanos Gutiérrez? You will love LA LOM! La Los Angeles League of Musicians is an instrumental trio — double bass, electric guitar, percussion — formed in the Californian city in 2021. They perform a blend of ’60s soul ballads, classic romantic boleros, twangy Peruvian Chicha music, and Bakersfield country sounds! THEE SACRED SOULS LES PERFORMANCES TD Tuesday, July 2, 2024, 9:30 p.m. Scène TD Free! Producer, director, instrumentalist and singer, Charlotte Day Wilson is one of the most important creators of modern Canadian music. Her polished R&B hits the mark every time. Festival-goers had the pleasure of hearing her perform on this very stage during the pandemic. Now she’s back to delight us all once again. MEDICINE SINGERS LES SPECTACLES ROGERS Saturday, July 6, 2024, 11 p.m. Scène Rogers Free! A powerful vocal and percussive group! Composed of Israeli guitar virtuoso Yonatan Gay, ex-Monotonix; Lee Ranaldo, American guitarist and singer, co-founder of cult band Sonic Youth; and Zoon, an Anicinape shoegaze musician from Canada nominated on more than one occasion for Juno and Polaris awards, Medicine Singers takes the audience on an almost spiritual experience, somewhere between the traditional pow-wow, the wild rock ‘n’ roll of the 1950s underground and the more experimental revivalists of the 1980s. Singing in Algonquin, Lakota, Ojibwe and Wapishana, Medicine Singers blend jazz, rock, blues, ancestral traditions and the avant-garde. |
