The Stephen Philip Harvey Octet Debut Release "Elemental" - Drops May 5th!

Elemental is the octet debut of emerging saxophonist, composer, and educator Stephen Philip Harvey. Active in the Mid Atlantic region, Harvey boasts his octet as one of several ensembles under his name. This mid-sized ensemble is one of his several explorations in the varying instrumentations and traditions of jazz music. This record comes on the heels of Harvey’s large ensemble release and is the debut release of Hidden Cinema Records, Harvey’s own label.

Composed during the COVID-19 pandemic, this collection of music is inspired by the classical elements: fire, air, water, and earth. This album takes the ideations of classical philosophy and represents them through Harvey’s distinct voice. With a range of electrifying, ethereal, and exciting moments, Elemental is an impactful entry into Harvey’s burgeoning catalog.

This octet showcases the musicianship of colleagues from throughout the Mid Atlantic region. From New York City to Northeast Ohio, these musicians bring the vibrance of their diverse music scenes to form this formidable unit. The band breathes vitality into these nature-influenced pieces under Harvey’s leadership for an impactful debut release. Elemental was made with support from the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council (getswac.org) and the Maryland State Arts Council (msac.org).
