VANDERLEI PEREIRA & BLINDFOLD TEST Appearing at Dizzy's TUESDAY JANUARY 10th Shows 7:30PM & 9:30PM

Virtuosic Brazilian drummer Vanderlei Pereira has been a dynamic force on the New York Brazilian jazz scene since 1988. His dazzling technique, combined with a deep knowledge of Brazilian rhythms, has captivated audiences around the world for decades.

On January 10, 2023, Vanderlei will bring his sextet Blindfold Test to Dizzy’s for a performance of the joyful music from Vision for Rhythm,  his critically acclaimed CD (Jazzheads).

Vanderlei Pereira and Blindfold Test boasts an unusual frontline of sax/flute and wordless vocal, backed by a burning rhythm section. The musicians of Blindfold Test wear blindfolds during the performance of some of the band's most challenging material in order to "level the playing field" for Vanderlei, who is blind.

“The best version of “Misturada” so far! The melody with Susan and the flute is perfect and the band is killing.”
— Airto Moreira

Born and raised in Macaé, Brazil, Vanderlei Pereira began playing drums professionally when he was 15. He earned his degree from the Academia de Música Lorenzo Fernandes in Rio de Janeiro, where he performed with the prestigious Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira. As a result of inherited retinitis pigmentosa, he became blind in his early thirties. While he could no longer work as a classical musician (since it requires reading), he did not let his loss of sight stop him, and he concentrated on his work as one of Rio’s top jazz and samba drummers.

After moving to New York, Vanderlei quickly became an in-demand drummer on the Brazilian jazz scene and earned a degree in Jazz Studies from the Mannes College of Music. He has recorded and/or appeared with a virtual “Who’s Who” of Brazilian and Latin music, including Toots Thielemans, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Bebel Gilberto, Leila Pinheiro, Rosa Passos, Claudio Roditi, Leny Andrade, Dom Salvador, Antonio Adolfo, Romero Lubambo, Tito Puente, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and many, many others.
