The »Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy« is Back The »Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy« is back for its second edition. After getting off to a successful start in 2021, the Jazz Academy will return on 15–19 August 2023, offering jazz musicians aged 18–30 another opportunity to work on their own musical compositions with renowned teachers for an entire week, and to perform them for the public in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall on 20 August. Eligible candidates can submit their applications at www.elbphilharmonie.de. Do you dream of standing on the magnificent Elbphilharmonie stage and learning from jazz greats such as Anat Cohen and Donny McCaslin? By taking part in the »Elbphilharmonie Jazz Academy«, you can make that dream come true! For one week starting on 15 August 2023, the concert hall is opening its doors to jazz musicians, of all instruments, aged between 18 and 30. They will be given a priceless opportunity to work on their own compositions and hone their musical styles, supported by renowned international teachers and benefitting from a mutual exchange with their contemporaries. The programme consists of workshops, jam sessions and talks on a variety of musical topics. The »Jazz Academy« culminates in a public closing concert in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall on 20 August. The Academy’s Artistic Director is the Israeli jazz musician Anat Cohen, who has been crowned Clarinettist of the Year by the »Jazz Journalists Association« numerous times. Besides her, the workshops will be led by a top-class teaching team made up of international jazz greats. These include the saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who became known far beyond the jazz scene with his performances on David Bowie’s final record »Blackstar«, the percussionist Matt Wilson (»There is almost nobody in Wilson’s peer group with a broader grasp of jazz history, or a more natural sense of time«, Jazz Times), and the Grammy Award-winner Sullivan Fortner on the piano. The German bassist, composer and arranger Martin Wind, who teaches at New York University (NYU), will be sharing his expertise, as will the Brazilian musician Clarice Assad. She initially gained fame as a singer, but has since long made a name for herself as an exceptional composer and multi-instrumentalist who pays no heed to genre boundaries. That characteristic fits in perfectly with the Academy’s interdisciplinary approach: the focus lies firmly on collaborative work in a variety of sound constellations. The practical musical element is complemented by expertise from the Elbphilharmonie’s Education department. Participants will have to make their own arrangements to travel to Hamburg and pay travel costs themselves.
