Guitarist/ Vocalist Pascal Bokar launches the Jazz, Culture & Social Justice Project Southwest Tour Award-winning jazz musician and renowned author Dr. Pascal Bokar Thiam will hit the road this early fall with Pascal Bokar’s Afro Blue Grazz Band. Thiam, who attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music, is a Jim Hall Jazz Master Award for Guitarists recipient. The tour will begin in Arizona and culminate with a sold-out performance in Live at Jazz Aspen Snowmass. Thiam is excited to return to Live at Jazz Aspen Snowmass. “It will be a full-circle moment, ” Dr. Thiam, whose first Live at Jazz Aspen Snowmass performance occurred in 1997. said. “Throughout my career I have understood the importance of West African music and the sounds of the South. Pascal Bokar’s Afro Blue Grazz Band creates textures and sews together that intersection of blues, gospel, blue grass and Jazz.” The program consists of a multimedia presentation that includes documentary film clips, conversational audio, and music excerpts, and is followed by a Q & A with Dr. Thiam. Dr. Thiam, who is with the Performing Arts & Social Justice Department of the University of San Francisco, lectures on the topic of Jazz and its relationship to African culture in educational institutions in the U.S. and abroad. For the Jazz, Culture & Social Justice Project, Dr. Thiam discusses the significant but often-overlooked West African cultural contributions that forever shaped American popular music through the Blues of the Mississippi Delta. Dr. Thiam's presentation is followed by a 45-minute concert with his award-winning Pascal Bokar Afro Blue Grazz Band. These events are made possible with the support of Jazz Road, a national initiative of South Arts, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W.
