The Legacy of Duke Ellington: Black, Brown, and Beige -- Sunday, April 25 via Zoom This Zoom presentation honors the great Duke Ellington, composer and arranger Billy Strayhorn, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Marcus Shelby will share some of his favorite recordings, stories, knowledge about band members, and history about Duke Ellington between 1940-1960. This prolific period included the famous Blanton Webster band during World War 2. Highlights of the period included compositions like “Black Brown, and Beige, ” “Harlem Suite, ” “Tattooed Bride, ” “Jump for Joy, ” several new suites, collaborations with Alvin Ailey, film scores, notable band members, and a revival at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956 that revitalized his career. Presented by Marcus Shelby, Healdsburg Jazz's Artistic Director and Duke Ellington's expert, he will include, comment, and discuss, audio and video footage with an engaged audience. Bay Area vocalist Denise Perrier will be invited to talk about her own perspective and long-time career experience as a major jazz singer during that period and after. This April we are celebrating one year of producing monthly Zoom Presentations that center on the artist, history, and culture of Jazz. These presentations have become one of our most successful programs and an amplifier for our organization to a broader, international audience. It’s also Duke Ellington’s birthday!
