Interzoo 2016 showcases trends and innovations for domestic pets

When Interzoo in Nuremberg opens its doors from 26 to 29 May 2016, trade visitors will enjoy the widest range of products ever displayed at the world's leading fair for the pet supplies industry. More than 1,800 companies (up from 1,700 in 2014) from more than 60 countries will provide an overview of their global ranges of pet foods and accessories, grooming products, services, gardening and equestrian products. The WZF (pet industry service company), which is the organiser of the fair, is expecting around 40,000 trade visitors from more than 100 countries at this 34th Interzoo. The new products and latest trends for pets are healthy, ecologically sustainable and encourage physical development and feature functional components complemented by modern design.

The exhibitors will present their products and services for dogs, cats, fish and other pets on a record-breaking exhibition space of around 115,000 m2. The biggest display areas are occupied by companies from Germany, China and Italy, followed by the USA, the Netherlands, the UK and France. New participants this year are vendors from Guinea, Croatia, San Marino, Serbia and Cyprus. The international contingent has risen to 83 percent compared with 2014.

Healthy nutrition a global growth driver
High-quality products that guarantee healthy nutrition and development for pets are one of the growth drivers in the global pet supplies market. In the pet nutrition segment, the trending product lines continue to be those that take account of the individual needs and life phases of the respective animal species and groups. Norbert Holthenrich, President of the ZZF, regards suitable conditions for keeping pets absolutely essential under any circumstances.

"For species-appropriate pet keeping it is important that animal lovers can choose a pet that suits them in respect of their lifestyle, where they live, size of home and family situation, " said Holthenrich at the Interzoo press conference.

Supplies for dogs and cats the biggest segment
At Interzoo 2016, the biggest area by far is once again devoted to products for dogs and cats and accounts for 41 percent of manufacturers. The second largest segment, with 12 percent each, is for exhibitors of aquarium products and articles for small animals and rodents. Nine percent of the vendors are exhibiting products for ornamental birds, while six percent each will display articles for terrariums and products for animals in the garden. Three percent of the exhibiting companies offer accessories for equestrian sports, and two percent feature boutique items for pets. Other display areas include shop fitting and packaging, pet food technology, accessories for living with pets and specialist literature/multimedia. The exhibitor poll from which these percentages were derived allowed for multiple responses.

Pet owners spent over €92 billion worldwide
According to market research institute Euromonitor, the global market for pet supplies achieved a sales volume of €92.9 billion in 2015. The biggest markets are North America with more than €40.8 billion, and the European market with €28.8 billion in sales. For the coming years the market researchers also expect a real annual growth rate of around two percent.

At €4.5 billion, the total turnover in the German retail specialist and food trade was up 2.2 percent on the previous year. Of this, €3.1 billion was for pet food and €953 million was for pet accessories. According to estimates by the ZZF and IVH industry associations, pet owners spent around €450 million on top of this for pet supplies and pet food via online channels. In Germany, the pet shop is still the first port of call when buying pet supplies.

Cats still the most popular pet
In Germany, more than 40 percent of households have pets. Their favourite animal is the cat. There are 12.9 million cats in total living in 22 percent of households, more than half of them generally indoors. In second place come 7.9 million dogs; 16 percent of households prefer dachshunds, terriers etc. to be their companions. In addition, there are 5.1 million small mammals, the most popular by far being the dwarf rabbit.

Among the 4.2 million ornamental birds, budgerigars are the most common. Ornamental fish live in 2 million aquariums and 1.6 million garden ponds. In the aquarium segment, freshwater aquariums are the most popular. Only five percent of aquarium enthusiasts own saltwater aquariums. Moreover, there are terrarium animals in a total of 700, 000 terrariums.

Interzoo is hosted by pet industry service company WZF, which has commissioned NürnbergMesse GmbH to organise and operate the event.
