belektro 2014 looks at the future task of urban development

Everyone is talking about the smart city of the future, but what is its definition? What is its potential for sustainable urban development and what are the risks involved? Taking place at belektro 2014 on 16 October 2014 in Hall 2.2 (Stand 113b), a specialist forum of the Berlin Architectural Association will dwell on the many issues this topic raises. The forums of the Berlin Architectural Association have been among the highlights of the supporting programme of the Trade Fair for Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Lighting since 2010.

"By addressing the topic of 'the smart city – the opportunities and risks of sustainable urban development' the Architectural Association aims to raise awareness for the tasks that lie ahead", says Dipl.-Ing. Christine Edmaier, president of the Berlin Architectural Association, in her introductory speech at belektro 2014. "The topic of smart cities is being propagated everywhere. We aim to stake out and debate the various positions on this subject. The focus of this forum on Thursday will be to discuss the many future tasks in Germany and the EU as well as the challenges they present. Sustainable urban development can only succeed if everyone is involved at all levels."

Taking place on day two of belektro, this event will feature three papers followed by a discussion. André Müller of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development will be the first to speak. His paper will dwell on 'understanding, defining and standardising smart cities in Germany and Europe'. Afterwards, Anne-Caroline Erbstößer of TSB Technologiestiftung Berlin will talk about 'the smart city – urban technologies for Berlin'.

The third paper will be held by Johanna Schlaack of the Center for Metropolitan Studies at TU Berlin. She will be asking 'Whose is the smart City? A scientific focus on the concept, issues and problem areas. Sylvia Zumstrull, chairperson of the Working Group on Sustainable Planning and Construction of the Berlin Architectural Association, will moderate the event.

Afterwards, the Architectural Association will be extending an invitation to attend the traditional get-together at the Architects' Forum which starts at 5 p.m. At the same time the first Innovative Street Lighting show will be taking place on a special display area next door which will provide an ideal opportunity for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.
